Krkin hram Through Time

Krkin hram, a vineyard manor on Trška Gora, has undergone numerous transformations over the centuries. From its beginnings in the 19th century, when it was purchased by lawyer Josef Suppan, the estate changed hands several times, including the successful merchant Karel Pollack. The most significant transformation was brought by the Remec family, who expanded and modernized the manor according to the designs of Jože Plečnik. In the second half of the 20th century, Ivan and Vida Rataj turned the estate into one of the largest and most modern vineyard properties in the Dolenjska region. Later, the pharmaceutical company Krka purchased the estate, restored the manor, named it Krkin hram, and continued its hospitality operations. Krkin hram thus represents an important cultural and historical heritage, connecting the past with the present and offering visitors a unique experience.

And what is it like here today?

And what is it like here today?

In 2024, we thoroughly renovated Krkin hram. On both buildings, we replaced the straw roof, which gives them their distinctive appearance and serves as the hallmark of the manor. Additionally, we restored the interior and facade and arranged the dining terrace and surroundings.

History of the Krkin hram

The vineyard manor Krkin hram, dating from the early 19th century, was purchased in 1859 by lawyer and notary Dr. Josef Suppan from Novo mesto, a representative of the Dolenjska towns in the Carniolan Provincial Assembly, later also mayor of Ljubljana and member of the Imperial Council in Vienna. The manor was partially renovated during his time, as indicated by the date 1860 on the stone entrance portal.

In 1916, the estate was bought by the successful merchant and industrialist Karel Pollak, who thoroughly renovated the vineyard manor. In 1917, it received an extension (press house) with a concrete portal.

In 1928, the manor was purchased by Vladimir and Helena Remec. The new owners had both buildings – the main building and the extension – adapted and enlarged to their current size in the same year. The renovation was carried out according to the plans of Slovenia’s greatest architect Jože Plečnik – on his advice, the buildings were thatched to “better blend into the local environment.” In 1928, the manor also received water supply, sewage, and electricity.

In the mid-1930s, the estate on Trška Gora was purchased by agronomist and vineyard expert Ivan Rataj from Mačkovec. In 1935, his wife Vida moved there from Ljubljana with their daughter Meta. Since engineer Rataj worked at the Provincial Committee in Ljubljana, he was often absent. On Trška Gora, his wife, a trained teacher, managed the estate successfully, organizing vineyard work; over time, the vineyard with noble grape varieties became the largest on Trška Gora, employing the most modern vineyard and cellar techniques, and they were the first in Dolenjska to cultivate the Portugalka variety.

Vida Rataj also opened a wine bar in the manor, which became a popular destination for Sunday trips – prominent citizens of Novo mesto liked to gather there. Ivan Rataj died shortly after World War II, and the estate was managed by his widow Vida until she sold it in 1977 to Krka, the pharmaceutical company. The company renovated the manor, named it Krkin hram, and continued its hospitality operations.
